It was an unseasonably warm day in February when I first stumbled upon Seven Shores Community Café. I was in search of a warm drink, a bit of food and a place to catch up on some reading. Usually I stick to the main strip of Uptown on King Street, but this day I happened to discover Seven Shores Community Café, tucked away on 10 Regina Street, just one road over from King Street. I couldn’t believe I had never been there before. It soon became one of my favourite cafés in Uptown.
Open weekdays from 7am until 6pm, and weekends from 8am until 4pm, Seven Shores is an ethical café that offers a wide range of food and drink and prides itself on using fresh, local ingredients. The first time I ever went here I was pleasantly surprised with the menu, for it was larger than I’d expected.
A wonderful selection of breakfast is available all day until 3pm, including free-range eggs, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, and my favourite: oatmeal. You’d think it would be hard to jazz up a boring classic like oatmeal, but at Seven Shores they succeed, adding a hint of cinnamon, a sprinkling of homemade granola, and a topping of fresh fruit and maple syrup. It’s my favourite bowl of oatmeal in town. The eggs are also great, cooked any way you like, with peameal bacon and toast made from fresh, seven grain bread.
For lunch, also served until 3pm, there’s a long list of sandwiches, a veggie burger, a couple of salads, and a soup of the day. There are also spring rolls; I get these every time I go for lunch. The spring rolls are a mix of fresh vegetables, mango, and the magic ingredient that makes them so good – sunflower butter – all wrapped together in rice paper and served with a spicy Thai dipping sauce. They are marvelous. The sunflower butter is so good, I would eat it with a spoon. Lunches are served with your choice of a side for a little something extra: you can choose soup, salad, apple chips or kettle chips.
Aside from the breakfast and lunch items, there are “snacks” that are served all day: the snacks menu includes a smaller portion of spring rolls, veggies and hummus, and cheese and crackers (which are fancier and more filling that you might think). The old cheddar cheese pairs well with a local summer sausage and a pile of crunchy, salty crackers.
Smoothies and Treats
The café also offers two different, refreshing smoothies, and a beautiful array of baked goods which includes scones, muffins, donuts, squares and multiple jars of cookies. Their cookies are huge! But you wouldn’t want them to be any smaller, because they are so tasty.
The coffee brewed at Seven Shores is not only delicious; it is also organic and fair-trade. If you order your coffee for here, it comes in one size and you get free refills! Other drinks include a variety of espresso-based drinks, hot chocolate, a fragrant selection of loose-leaf teas, and house-made organic chocolate milk.
The atmosphere at Seven Shores is airy, mellow and inviting. There is ample seating inside, plus a dining room that can be used for groups, meetings or quiet work. Wifi is also available for customers; the password is written on a chalkboard for everyone to see.
Art and Architecture
The walls feature beautiful, unique art from local artists that are also for sale. The floors are a dark wood and several eclectic chandeliers hang elegantly from the ceilings. The café is filled with tall windows that let in lots of sunlight and, on warm days, a gentle breeze. The windows look out onto the charming outdoor patio, partially enclosed by wooden boards and partially covered by a wooden lattice that allows dappled sunlight to warm the customers below.
The staff are passionate, friendly, and people-oriented. The café is perfect for all ages. Near the back you will find a kid’s corner, with toys, books and a tiny dining set. Families with children love to come here, but you will also find it’s a perfect environment for tapping away on your laptop and getting some work done.
If you’re looking for delicious, healthy food and a bright, cheerful place to gather with friends or family, Seven Shores Community Café is the perfect place for you.
