Fairview Park Mall – General Information

Fairview Park Mall is one of two major shopping centres in the Waterloo region. Opened in 1966, this mall now has 120 shops and services for patrons. In 2007 the mall underwent a $33.4 million interior renovation to give a new food court and new interiors, which include higher ceilings. The parking lot was also recently redone and spans every side of the mall, so there is always lots of parking. The exterior of the mall has yet to be renovated or revamped, but the inside is very up to date, modernized, clean and spacious.

This mall is noted for being, like many Canadian establishments, host to friendly retail clerks and helpful staff, while patrons are respectful and act in a civilised manner. This mall has many shops that cannot be found elsewhere in Kitchener-Waterloo, making it a must-see stop for a shopping experience. The other major mall in Kitchener-Waterloo is Conestoga Mall, at the north end of Waterloo. Fairview has several unique shops and higher-end brands like Guess and Zara.

It covers a wide variety of interests for all genders, ages and tastes. The food court is a pleasant spot to grab a quick, affordable meal to re-energize while you peruse the different wings.

Patrons have noted that this mall is very well kept, especially after the recent renovation. You will notice a good amount of natural light in the hallways, as well as high ceilings and wide hallways. There are many benches along the hallways, should you need to stop for a rest or use the free WiFi. Except maybe on Saturdays, the mall is usually not packed, making it a comfortable experience to wander as you please. The washrooms are checked regularly and are well-lit, very clean, and spacious. There is a designated nursing station.

Address and HoursSource

The mall is conveniently located right off Highway 8 at 2960 Kingsway Drive. Fairview Road is home to several big box stores like Homesense, Michaels, Toys r Us and Cineplex Odeon cinemas, so there is lots to see in the surrounding area. Several strip malls and restaurants are found along Fairview Road, should you want to venture out. While the mall has a Sunrise Records, across the street from the mall in the Canadian Tire plaza you will find The Beat Goes On, a secondhand music store that also sells TV and DVDs. It is worth the trip across the street.

A new movie theatre just opened across the street from the mall, called Cineplex Cinemas. It also features a VIP lounge that is licensed to serve alcohol. Also in the area are several hotels. The location of this mall makes it very convenient to spend a hot summer day exploring in an air-conditioned environment, and heading down or across the street to continue the fun. The interior is climate-controlled year round for optimal comfort of all guests.

Regular hours are as follows:

Monday 9:30am-9:00pm
Tuesday 9:30am-9:00pm
Wednesday 9:30am-9:00pm
Thursday 9:30am-9:00pm
Friday 9:30am-9:00pm
Saturday 9:30am-6:00pm
Sunday 11:00am-5:00pm

Wal-Mart is an exception: though attached to the mall, it remains open until 11pm. The mall closes for regular statutory holidays. A statutory holiday is one that is required by law, as they are celebrated nationwide, and provide a day off, with pay, for employees. These include New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Canada Day, Labour Day, and Christmas Day.

As there are 120 stores and services here, there are many job opportunities. Since the mall is also a bus terminal, you can easily get here with or without a vehicle. You can become a stylist, floor supervisor, manager, keyholder, and more. For a full list of employment opportunities, visit their website.

This mall is a transportation hub of Waterloo Region, and is highly accessible from a variety of transportation, whether you drive, take the bus, or plan to ride the train in the future. There is a bus terminal for routes 1, 7, 8, and 200 iXpress that go farther onto Cambridge or into Waterloo. This terminal is on the side of the mall with Hudson’s Bay, so when you get off the bus you will enter this department store and venture into the rest of the mall from here. This pedestrian crossing can be busy at times, with all of the buses and cars and other pedestrians, but there is a designated crosswalk and car drivers are usually quite patient and kind.

The cities of Kitchener-Waterloo are currently under construction for a major railway known as the Light Rail Transit system. Train tracks are being laid from Conestoga Mall, which is in the north end of Waterloo, all the way to Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener. The train will go from one mall to the other with several stops in between. It is scheduled to launch in 2018.

As mentioned, the mall is also conveniently situated right off Highway 8, so you can beat the city traffic and take the highway. There is plenty parking on all sides of the mall: you will never have trouble finding a parking spot here.

One of the most popular shopping stops is Sephora, a French cosmetics store founded in 1969. It is just beside the food court; you will notice its large black and white stripes on the façade of the store. Here you will find numerous high quality makeup brands, many of which are cruelty-free and/or all natural. This is a highly sought-after store that is not yet available anywhere else in Waterloo Region, although rumour has it one is opening in Conestoga Mall late 2017.

The mall is anchored by department stores Wal-Mart, Sears, and Hudson’s Bay. There is a pharmacy in Wal-Mart, but that is the only pharmacy in this mall.

There is a plus-size-specific store called Torrid, making this an important destination with unique shops. As well, you will find Aritzia here, one of the higher-end brand name stores at this mall. You will find a selection of higher-end names at this mall that you won’t find elsewhere in Waterloo Region.

The assortment of shops is very inclusive, meaning there are options for people of many different income levels. This variation in stores makes it a hot destination for people from all over Kitchener-Waterloo. You will find options for children, teenagers, adults and seniors, including fashion, accessories, technology, spa services, and amusement.

The only pharmacy in this mall is located inside the Wal-Mart. Many patrons have a love-hate relationship for this store, as it caters to many needs at low prices, but patrons have often stated the presence of this store brings down the overall tone of the mall itself. However, it is a necessary destination for many people.
