The Bauer Kitchen and Bakery Waterloo – My Review

The Bauer Kitchen, also known as TBK, is many things all at once. It is a beautiful restaurant and also a charming café and bakery. It serves lunch and dinner and also brunch on the weekends. It is elegant and classy yet cozy and relaxed. It’s everything you could want in a restaurant and more!

The word “Bauer” actually means “farmer” in German, which perfectly describes the restaurant because the food is prepared with ingredients that are fresh and high-quality. If you order eggs at brunch, they taste like a chicken just laid them, and if you order a salad at lunchtime it tastes like it came straight from the garden. The Bauer Kitchen achieves this freshness by partnering with many local farms and butchers.

The Menu

The menu at The Bauer Kitchen combines fine-dining with familiar favourites. The food is made with quality ingredients and cooked to perfection with great attention to detail. It is a more upscale restaurant, so some of the dishes are a bit fancier than other restaurants, but not too fancy. It’s the perfect place to try something you’ve never had before!

The Lunch Menu

We’ll start with the lunch menu. Beginning with appetizers, there are a range of choices that are sure to peak your interest! There is a charcuterie board, a cheese board and a three-cheese dip which are all perfect for sharing. In fact when I was last here, my friend and I shared the cheese dip. It comes with bread and pita chips for dipping. It was absolute heaven, honestly, it was amazing. I definitely recommend it. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can try the confit duck wings, the crispy truffle polenta or the braised lamb meatballs!

There are several gourmet salads as well as sandwiches and burgers. All of the sandwiches are made on their own house-made bread, and the burgers are antibiotic-free and hormone-free. There are also a number of pizzettas – stone oven pizza served with salad on the side. If you’re feeling hungrier and also classier, there are some exquisite entrees, including steak frites and seared organic salmon.

The Dinner Menu

The dinner menu includes everything on the lunch menu (with the exception of sandwiches), with the addition of several even more delicious meals! There are a few more appetizers to choose from, and some beautiful entrees, such as the lemon and rosemary roast chicken and the bacon-wrapped Norwich tenderloin (just writing it makes my mouth water).

Dessert & Drinks

If you still have room at the end of your meal, there are many delectable desserts to choose from, including a few different types of cakes, a crème brulée, sorbets and gelatos. The Bauer Kitchen also whips up a number of espresso based drinks, as well as wine, beer, premium cocktails and their very own house-made whiskey!

Brunch

On Saturday and Sunday from 9am until 3pm, The Bauer Kitchen serves breakfast, or “brunch” if it’s later in the day and you feel like being fancy about it. Brunch includes many different egg dishes, such as eggs Benedict, omelettes, and breakfast burritos. There is also a yogurt parfait with granola and fruit, and cinnamon French toast. The French toast is pecan granola crusted and is served with whipped mascarpone and apple bourbon compote, how incredible does that sound?

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is incredibly cozy and romantic. There are exposed brick walls, elegant brick pillars and glowing lights that hang down from the ceilings. The open-concept kitchen displays all the chefs expertly preparing food next to the blazing fire of the stone oven. The ambiance feels fancy but not overly formal; it’s the perfect place for a date or a nice dinner with friends or family. There is also a beautiful outdoor patio with a view of the courtyard, shaded with umbrellas and lined with flower pots.

If you’re looking for a place to host an event, The Bauer Kitchen has dining rooms available for private events.

The Bauer Bakery & Café

It doesn’t stop there! The Bauer Kitchen is connected to The Bauer Bakery & Café, which can be entered through the restaurant or from outside.

The Bauer Cafe and Bakery

If you don’t have time to sit down to a restaurant meal, it’s the perfect place to go for a sandwich, a salad, a quiche or a soup. In addition to the usual sandwiches served, the bakery sells a special feature sandwich each day, crafted by the culinary team at The Bauer Kitchen. They also offer assorted muffins, croissants, pain au chocolat, scones, cookies and bars. And of course, there is hot, freshly brewed coffee and espresso drinks.

The bakery also makes their own bread which is sold by the loaf, including sourdough, multigrain, mini ciabattas and burger buns! There a few seats inside the café as well as a few seats outside.
